Should You Offer Remote Flexibility?

October 15, 2019

If you are like me, morning traffic is the absolute worst way to start a day. The added stressor of bumper-to-bumper rubberneckers takes away some of the energy that can help someone be at peak performance early in the morning. A rising number of companies have implemented flexible work options including full remote, partial remote, flexible start hours, etc. This type of flexibility is quickly becoming one of the most requested “perks” from job candidates, but it can also be a huge positive for the business.

Many jobs in today’s modern workforce can easily be accomplished without the need to go to a designated office space. By working from home, employees save money and are overall happier with their job. A big factor in remote flexibility is trust. If a boss cannot trust that their employees will be on task when given the flexibility to work from home, there is either an issue with the boss’ mentality or the employee should not be employed with that company. While I agree with the counter argument that the convenience of face-to-face interaction can create a more cohesive atmosphere amongst the team and build camaraderie, the reality is that it works for specific personality types. In my opinion, and experience speaking with many professionals, a majority of individuals would be more productive and happier if they had LESS face-to-face interaction with their peers to allow more focus to be on the task at hand.

Even if full remote isn’t realistic for your business, allowing one or two days is an easy solution to creating happier employees who feel respected, trusted, and valued. And if you are still questioning how important remote flexibility can be, I’ve seen NUMEROUS candidates leave companies for equal or slightly less pay for the option to work from home. Try implementing a one day remote flexibility policy and monitor your metrics. Is there an increase in productivity? Do your employees seem happier and more refreshed? Is there a slower turnover rate? Then you’ve finally seen what all the hype is about. Join the remote revolution!
