To Search or Not to Search During the Holiday Season

December 15, 2020

Wow, what a year! As 2020 comes to a close and the holidays are near, time to sip that eggnog and coast into 2021, right?

No! As a job seeker, this can be a great time to make a strong push on your job search. A slower holiday season for some businesses, can mean more time for hiring.

Another reason is due to annual budgets. Hiring manager’s may have a deadline to spend on additional staff before the end of the year cutoff.

Competition from other job seeker’s could be smaller. Some might put their search on hold in the month of December which could work in your favor. You could land the interview that might be harder to snag at a different time of year.

I have added a few tips to help if a job is at the top of your holiday wish list:

  • Keep your job search organized – It takes a strong multi-tasker to juggle the distractions of the holiday AND manage multiple job applications. I found this article to be helpful.
  • Networking – You couldn’t pick a better time to network, even if it is virtual! Accept all the invitations you receive; both business and personal. You never know who might be able to assist, and have your ‘elevator pitch’ ready.
  • Holiday cards are a nice touch – Send out holiday or New Year greetings to your network, don’t forget recruiters and employers you have interviewed with.
  • A temporary seasonal/project job could become permanent – You never know what can happen once you get your foot in the door. A lot of companies will keep a temp worker, so make a great impression!
  • Connect online – Make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated and include a professional photo. The holidays are a great excuse to touch base and reinforce your connections.

Yes, it has been a tough year for so many reasons but wouldn’t it be nice to start 2021 with a new job? Get that resume polished and start searching those job boards.

All of us at Tews Company wish you a Happy Holiday season and wish you all the best on your job search. Here’s to a happy and healthy New Year!
