Maximizing LinkedIn for Your Job Search

August 27, 2019

Is your LinkedIn profile up to date? If you are searching for a new job, that is where you need to start. LinkedIn CEO, Jeff Weiner, offered three tips in a CBS This Morning interview on how to maximize your profile:

  1. Keep your profile up to date.
  2. Be comprehensive about current skills and objectives.
  3. Highlight your recent experience.

First things first, I highly encourage you to add a profile picture. This is not just a basic resume. LinkedIn offers you a chance to insert your personality and professionalism. Take advantage of the headline and summary space. If you can announce that you are seeking opportunities, add that to the headline and entice your audience with specific skills. The summary section allows for 3-5 short paragraphs to elaborate your accomplishments and what you are seeking in your next role. Under the Experience section, showcase your previous positions and employers, including company websites. Under each position, include numbers that highlight what you did, who it impacted and how well you did it.

Have at least 50 connections. You want to build your network and exposure to as many people as possible. A connection could introduce you to someone employed at a company you are trying to get into. Ask for recommendations from your connections.

Use LinkedIn as a research tool. Investigate companies you are interested in and the top executives who work there. Join professional groups that align with your profession. Also search for your college alumni group, this could be a common interest for someone you would like to connect with.

Finally, did you know about the ‘job seeking preferences’ button? You can find this option under ‘Settings & Privacy’ in your profile. By clicking yes, you can let recruiters like myself know that you are open to new opportunities and being contacted about open jobs.  It is a quick and easy way to alert recruiters and employers that you are on the job market.

Remember, first impressions truly count, and LinkedIn is a great tool to help you do that! Take advantage of what it has to offer!
